Art project contest: A spoon further - “The essence of it is very simple: to give ordinary aluminum spoons, which can be found in great amounts in obshchepit, to professional jewelers and convince them to make something resembling pieces of art out of these spoons, i.e. to see what will happen to the spoons further.

The jewelers, inspired by the idea of the Oleg Yelovoy, created works of art out of 200 mm nails. They could use any method (except for those told by the author’s imagination). The results of “Master Nail” were beyond all expectations. Virtuosity of skill, marvelous, luxurious pieces of jewelry… and no nails. One and a half year later the jewelers took up aluminum spoons. The rules of the contest “A spoon further” resemble those of the “nail” competition: the artists could do with the spoon whatever his/her vivid imagination prompted.”

Adam Wallacavage is a brilliant photographer and sculptor who sculpts chandeliers - surrealistic octopus chandeliers, some with sinuous arms swept by the movements of the sea, others at rest, and still others showing off their prey. Here are a mere six octopus chandeliers to arouse your appetite for more!

These octopus chandeliers are from a larger collection currently showing at the Jonathon LeVine Gallery in Manhattan through July 26, 2008. Most of Wallacavage’s chandeliers are sculpted with mixed media, epoxy-coated cast plaster, and lamp parts. Some incorporate jewelry, shells, and other ornaments.

Nina Simone Chandelier

Did I mention that Wallacavage is a music buff and that the subjects of his photography are primarily musicians? The Nina Simone octopus chandelier is a rapturous tribute to that great singer.

 Sea Beast Chandelier

The Sea Beast does look menacing…. The wallpaper in the background is Adam Wallacavage’s design, called Kelp.

Green Fuzz of the Psychedelic Jungle Chandelier

The Green Fuzz Jungle chandelier is one piece of Wallacavage’s Green Fuzz series, that also includes wall sconces and smaller versions of the chandelier. The wallpaper behind the Green Fuzz Jungle chandelier is a dark version of Wallacavage’s Kelp.

The Argus Chandelier

In Greek mythology, the Argus had 100 eyes and was the guardian of a girl who was raped by Zeus and turned into a cow. The story doesn’t get better from there, but suppose it stopped with the guardian part…. This Argus is wide enough (54″ diameter) to watch over your whole room!

Cicciolina Chandelier

Is the Italian porn star/singer/actress/politician “Cicciolina” the inspiration for this exquisite sculptured chandelier? She casts a wide shadow on the ceiling!

OctopusChandeliers5

 Fenicologia Chandelier

Just a tad Rococo, the Fenicologia chandelier shows yet another aspect of the designer’s imagination. Can’t you just see this chandelier in Marie Antoinette’s tea room? Wallacavage collaborates here with jewelry designer Tarina Tarantino.

bmw_art_com_museum_germany_wired

The renovated BMW Museum in Munich, Germany, offers one of the largest spaces for focused car-design ogling, and is as large (5000 square meters) an expression of the company’s outsized engineering expectations as it is an interesting new space for art. The latter label comes mostly from the mechatronic piece by ART+COM called the Kinetic structure, an awesome installation project made out of moving, sliver spheres.

ART+COM is a media development company that creates high tech installations, and they take an abstract approach with their concept —- depicting the design of a car and its eventual relationship with the elements through real-style ‘animations.’

From the looks of the videos, they’ve succeeded- the illustration of each silver sphere according to a point in space is so precise that if the clip is fast forwarded, it will resemble the real movements of a half-car moving. It also reminds us of the motion capture process of modern movies, but in reverse — the motion before the capture, if you will.

The structure is made from 714 metal balls, and each ball lowers and retracts autonomously from the others.

Check out the videos after the jump:

Watch this amazing display of 714 metal balls on strings. It really gets creative after 1 minute. So please be patient.

Fake swimming pool art installation in an art museum at Kanazawa City by Argentinian artist Leandro Erlich. There are replicas all over the worlds and people underneath the swimming pool can actually look above where it is covered with a piece of glass with realistic water effect on top of it.
